Plea rejected, Tejpal arrested

He waited at crime branch office for ruling on anticipatory bail
Tehelka editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal was arrested close to 9.30 p.m. on Saturday on charges of sexually assaulting a young colleague, after Sessions Court judge Anuja Prabhudesai rejected his anticipatory bail application. He was taken to the Goa Medical College for a check-up after arrest.

Judge Prabhudesai’s order came a little after 8 p.m. She started hearing the matter at 10 a.m. and said the order would be delivered by 4.30 p.m. However, the order was delivered three and a half hours later. Mr. Tejpal applied for bail on Friday. He was granted interim bail till 10 a.m. on Saturday.

At 4.30 p.m., when the order was expected, Mr. Tejpal was headed to the Goa crime branch with members of his family including his brother, a friend and one daughter. They left shortly before he was arrested by investigating officer Sunita Sawant who arrived with the court order. His counsel Geeta Luthra told reporters, “he is cooperating with the authorities.”

He will be produced before Judicial Magistrate First Class, Panaji onSunday to be remanded in police custody, police sources said.

The court proceedings were attended by Mr. Tejpal’s wife, daughter and a few family friends.Mr. Tejpal was also present in the morning. Special Public Prosecutor Saresh Lotalikar, opposing the bail application, argued that the police needed to take Mr. Tejpal into custody for the “truth to come out.. Mr. Tejpal was trying to influence the victim’s family members since he was in a “position of power,” he added.

Mr. Lotalikar said that the victim had stuck to her version, unlike Mr. Tejpal. “The accused is like a chameleon, who changes his colour every now and then,” he said. He also argued, “Mr. Tejpal’s cooperation seems to be coming on his own terms. He was not available at his home in Delhi when Goa police went there.” He alleged that Mr. Tejpal was using court proceedings to evade arrest.

Ms. Luthra said there was no need to arrest Mr. Tejpal since he was willing to cooperate with the police. “He will do as police wants him to do, even stay in Goa for time period required by them,” she said.

Twitter halo fades after listing; Facebook, LinkedIn hold ground

New York, December 1, 2013 After a big-bang listing, Twitter shares seem to be losing its fizz while social media rivals Facebook and LinkedIn are holding the fort amid portfolio churn by investors. In a dream debut, microblogging site Twitter's stock popped up on NYSE debut on November 7, and closed with 73 per cent gain for investors who subscribed to its initial public offering price of $26 apiece. The firm, which lets people post 140-character messages, raised $1.8 billion in a keenly watched IPO. Skeptics were left speechless as the valuation of the firm, which is yet to make profit after 7 years of existence, soared to over $25 billion even as tech firms like Facebook and LinkedIn ended 2-4 per cent lower that day. However, the momentum in Twitter shares seem to be falling already and analysts have begun to question the company's current valuations vis-a-vis Facebook and LinkedIn, arguing on better margins and larger size for the two. After closing at $44.90 on November 7, Twitter share price has failed to reach new highs and has entered December with a last traded price of $41.57 apiece - an over seven per cent drop from first day closing. Along with a knock on share price, volumes have sharply dried up too. From 117 million shares traded on debut day, daily number of shares traded stand at about 6 million at present. In contrast, the overall U.S. markets have inched up during this period as economic recovery picked up pace. Besides, Facebook and LinkedIn stocks have also begun to warm up. Mark Zuckerberg-led social networking giant's shares haven't moved up from $47 levels on the day of Twitter's fantastic debut but investors have not lost money in Facebook. In fact, Facebook IPO investors are sitting on good profits since its listing in May, 2012 at around $38 levels. "A multiple (of Twitter) that far above its peer group of 17.4 times leaves little to the imagination; there seems to us no upside (to price) scenario not already more than included in Twitter's implied growth outlook...," research firm Hudson Square said in a note to clients. Professional online networking portal LinkedIn has already landed gains for investors if they bought its shares instead of Twitter on Day 1 of microblogging site's listing. From $211 apiece, LinkedIn now trades six per cent higher at $224. It's been a dream run for LinkedIn IPO investors after the issue hit markets in 2011. From $45 levels, the stock has more than quadrupled in less than 4 years. Experts feel in the medium term, business-wise Facebook and LinkedIn are better-placed than Twitter. "We expect Twitter's average annual revenue per user to amount to $2.8 in 2013, which stands significantly below our expectation for Facebook and LinkedIn. While the figure for Facebook is expected to hit $6.5, the same for LinkedIn will reach $8.3. It is evident that Twitter has a long way to go in terms of monetising its platform," analyst firm Trefis said in a report this month.

ISRO successfully sends Mars orbiter into sun-centric orbit

CHENNAI: December 1, 2013 India's spacecraft to Mars has bid adieu to its Earth-bound orbit and is cruising in its sun-centric orbit. In a remarkably successful execution of a complex manoeuvre, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) fired the propulsion system on board the spacecraft for a prolonged duration of 23 minutes from 0049 hours on Sunday. In space parlance, the manoeuvre is called Trans-Mars Injection (TMI). ISRO called it "the mother of all slingshots." Celebrations broke out at the control centre of the ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) at Bangalore from where the spacecraft specialists gave commands for the orbiter's 440 Newton engine to begin firing. ISRO Chairman K. Radhakrishnan told The Hindu from ISTRAC, "Everything went of well. We took stock of the spacecraft's health and everything is normal. We just had a meeting with all the ground controllers and mission directors who briefed us on the spacecraft's systems and all are working well." M. Annadurai, Programme Director, Indian Remotesensing Satellites and Small Satellites, ISRO, said "everything was normal during the firing, which went on as per the planned timeline." He added that there was jubilation in the ISTRAC control room with scientists distributing sweets. "We had exciting moments and a satisfying day," said S. Arunan, Project Director, Mars Orbiter. "The sun-centric phase has started and the Canberra station has started acquiring the spacecraft for tracking it." Deviprasad Karnik, ISRO spokesman, said the spacecrafts propulsion system produced a textbook performance.

Wasim Jaffer Should be given a chance in International cricket

Do any one thinks that Wasim Jaffer should have be given a chance in test arena? He is a dashing opener and he is the batsman who recently scored his 50th first class centuries. He played for India many years ago. He played 31 test with runs close to 2000. He also scored 5 centuries. It's very sad that he is not given a chance. Selectors are making waste of his talent .He should be given a chance to play for India for the tour of New Zealand or England in 2014.
